Child-Resistant Packaging Compliance: What Cannabis & Supplement Brands Need to Know

Child-resistant (CR) packaging is a legal requirement in many cannabis and hemp markets, and a growing expectation for supplement and wellness brands as well. But "CR compliant" isn't a single, universal standard — requirements vary by product category and by jurisdiction, and it's easy to assume a packaging format is compliant when it isn't quite there yet. Here's what actually matters.

CR certification refers to the closure mechanism, not the whole bag

Child-resistant certification applies specifically to how a package opens and recloses — the mechanism has to be genuinely difficult for young children to defeat while remaining reasonably accessible to adults. This means the printing, material, and general bag structure can stay fully customized; it's the zipper or closure design itself that carries the certification, tested against recognized child-resistance protocols.

Requirements differ by product and region

Cannabis packaging regulations vary significantly between states and countries, and requirements for supplements or hemp-derived products differ again. Some jurisdictions require CR packaging only above a certain THC threshold; others require it for any cannabis product regardless of potency. Before finalizing packaging, it's worth confirming the specific requirement that applies to your product category and the region you're selling into, since a packaging supplier can tell you whether their closure is CR-certified, but confirming which regulations apply to your specific product is the brand's responsibility.

Common compliance mistakes

CR packaging can still be fully on-brand

A common misconception is that CR packaging limits design options. In practice, the certified element is contained within the zipper mechanism — every panel of the bag can still carry full custom print, foil accents, matte or gloss finishes, and window panels, exactly as with non-CR packaging.

Working with your packaging supplier

When sourcing CR packaging, ask directly which certification standard applies, whether the bags are available in your required sizes, and whether samples are available to test before a full production run. A reliable supplier should be able to answer all three without hesitation.
